Synopsis: What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling debut from Mhairi McFarlane.
Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away.
They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.

Normally Chic Lit isn’t my think so I’m always hesitant to start any books – especially when they have girly colours on the cover (I think I’m the only woman who hates pink!). But with a name like ‘You Had me At Hello’, I had to give this one a try.
The book had me at the first page – it’s a light-hearted and beautifully written exploration of the idea of ‘what if’: what if the one that got away comes back? What if you think it’s too late but you go for it anyway? What if? What if? What if?!
McFarlane’s narrative is sharp and thought provoking; her characters literally jump off the page and send you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Rachel and Ben’s story engulfs you from the very beginning and alongside some laugh out loud moments (which had to happened to me on the train home!), there are some situations which really tug on the heartstrings.
You Had Me At Hello is one of the best “rom-com” books I have read in a long time, and I’m excited about what Mhairi McFarlane has in store for us next.
